A ‘Vette Sampler From Mecum Auctions, Indy 2017

Screen Shot 2017-05-17 at 11.02.15 AMWe dig keeping our fingers on the pulse of Corvette values and also keeping tabs on auctions houses to monitor Chevy two-seaters emerging for sale around the country and landing in the mid-west to find new owners. You never know what diamond Corvettes will be dusted off and rolled across the block.

Mecum’s has a big Corvette turnout this year for their auction event in Indianapolis, IN  running this week through Sunday, May 21st.

Mecum Auction Company is the world leader of collector car, vintage and antique motorcycle, and Road Art sales, hosting auctions throughout the United States. The company has been specializing in the sale of collector cars for 29 years, now offering more than 20,000 lots per year and averaging more than one auction each month.

“We’ve come a long way from our first official auction at the Rockford Airport in 1988,” notes President Dana Mecum. “We’re really a family business that grew up and got big. Our goal has always been to give Mecum Auction attendees an amazing experience and unite them with an incredible car they will enjoy.”

Mecum Auctions is headquartered in Walworth, Wisconsin, and since 2011 has been ranked No. 1 in the world with number of collector cars offered at auction, No. 1 in the world with number of collector cars sold at auction, No. 1 in the U.S. with number of auction venues, No. 1 in the U.S. in total dollar volume of sales, and is host to the world’s largest collector car auction held annually in Kissimmee, Florida.

We chose five ‘Vettes that are due to cross the block this week and it’s a diverse cross section of Corvettes. From restomods to restored mid-years, it will be interesting to see what they fetch…

1980 Corvette

We love C3s and have a soft spot for clean, rubber bumper drivers and this one looks to be a beauty. Chevy cranked up the factory and pumped out over 40k units this year, so not a rare car by any means, but that’s fine by us. Running a one year only L81 V8 with the 190hp motor, it looks to be pure and sweet.  A great car to grab coffee on Sundays and join the ‘Vette family without breaking the bank. SOLD $14,000.  Great buy on this nice silver shark!!

1964 Corvette Coupe

What’s a big kahuna Corvette event without a good mid-year or two?  Check out this crispy little red C2 coupe.  A 1964 model is a toughie because it doesnt have a split rear window and also doesn’t benefit from all the tweaks–like four-wheel disc brakes–that debuted in 1965.  Nonetheless, this car is a beauty with 28k original miles and in unrestored condition. It has the big horsepower, small block 327/365hp motor and knock-offs as well.  This thing should bring big bucks as unmolested, original cars are the cream of the crop.

2005 Grand Sport Clone

Next up is a late model C6 Grand Sport. With a rebuilt title, there might be a buy here.  This car is an early C6 that has been converted to look like a Grand Sport. We don’t know if this was a fender bender or a extensively damaged car, but with the salvage title, this might be a great weekend track bomber or a daily driver that you don’t have to worry about if it gets a nick.  Love the color and chrome wheels too.

The restomod movement is in full bloom so it will be interesting to see what this 1972 Coupe brings.  Running a 400hp LS3, a good stout horsepower injection cures many ills.

According Mecum, “Following time-honored Resto Modding practice, the Corvette’s 1972 driveline was removed to make way for modern power, in this case a new C6 LS3 all-aluminum small-block 6.2L/430 HP V-8 introduced in the 2008 model-year Corvette. Fitted with a 2007 Corvette radiator and electric fans and a custom oil pan to meet ground-clearance requirements, the LS3 is mated to a 2000 Camaro 6-speed manual transmission controlled by a hydraulic clutch and driving a 3.70:1 Positraction center section.

The V-8 exhales through custom-fabricated midyear-style chambered exhaust, giving it the unmistakable beat of a highly tuned first-generation Sting Ray. The interior was lined with Dynamat insulation before a complete refurbishing that included new wiring, Vintage Air and a 6-speaker stereo system with factory-style Custom Auto Sound head unit.

The original body was massaged back to better-than-new fit and finish and painted in glowing 2006 LeMans Blue. Completed in 2012, the car immediately won Best in Class and the Outstanding Engineering Award at that year’s AutoRama Houston, confirming its overall excellence.”

Now about that tippy toe stance.  We’d swap out those wheels and tires with a set of Rallys so fast it’d make your head spin.

Last but not least, we have a 1991 Corvette ZR-1 in the rare Polo green color.  These old super cars are a bargain no and this one is clean as a whistle and only one of 105 in green. We pristine interior is a nice punctuation against the leafy color.   We think ZR-1s are up and comers so get yours now folks while no one is paying attention.  This one’s a dandy with under 7k miles.Mecum 1991 ZR13
