SEMA 2011: B&B Performance Exhaust’s Purge Resonance Technology

B & B Performance complete exhaust system for 2010/2011 Camaros.

The goal was to create a mild exhaust not at cruising speeds but generate a more forceful note on aggressive driving.

Walking the trade show floor at the SEMA event can be a delightful experience because of all the automotive legends that you are exposed to. We were lucky enough to stop by the B & B Performance Exhaust booth and talk with company founder, owner and former IRL racer Billy Boat.

Boat was beaming as he informed us that he was going to be inducted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame this upcoming year at the annual Chili Bowl event in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Entering the Midget Hall of Fame is major honor, but one that Boat richly deserves, especially after having won one of the most prestigious events in Midget racing for three consecutive years. Boat became the first three-peat winner of the Turkey Night Grand Prix Midget Car race from 1995 through 1997. Consequently, Boat was selected by A.J. Foyt to race in the 1997 Indianapolis 500. The following year, Boat set records in the IRL by winning 6 poles, 5 of them in a row, capping off the year by winning the IRL race at Texas Motor Speedway.

Boat’s career began in USAC Sprint cars where he won 11 straight Western Series races and the Championship in 1995. What few people realize however, is that by this time Billy Boat already had a successful business career with B & B Performance Exhaust. The racer is a graduate of Arizona State University, where he learned about engineering and business to the degree that he launched Billy Boat Performance Exhaust in 1986. The company has become well known for making performance exhaust systems for luxury and high performance cars, light trucks and high performance watercraft.

Boat took the time to explain his company’s proprietary Purge Resonance Technology (PRT) to us. “The goal was to create a mild exhaust not at cruising speeds but generate a more forceful note on aggressive driving,” explained Boat. “In using a straight through design incorporating our unique purge chambers, we are able to give the driver the increased sound and performance they are looking for on moderate to hard acceleration yet cancel out the unwanted interior noise during low rpm cruising,” he added. According to Boat, “The 2005/2007 C-6 Corvette complete exhaust system will give you 40 horsepower over the OE forced induction system.”

"Quality first, made in the USA," said Boat.

Boat explained some of the features of the Camaro and Corvette exhaust systems manufactured by the company, “We also place quality first and pride ourselves on being made in the USA. Our catalytic converters are made from 3/4 stainless steel with hi flow capabilities.”

Features of the 2010/2011 Camaro exhaust system:

  • CNC mandrel bent T304 stainless steel tubing throughout entire system
  • Hand fabricated T304 stainless mufflers incorporating B&B’s Purge Resonance Technology (PRT)
  • V8 is a full 3″ system, while the V6 is a 2.5″ system
  • Mufflers are available in a new “satin” finish or polished
  • Tips are available in the new “Satin Black” finish
  • Performance increases of 30HP and 28Ft-Lbs with headers & Classics system
  • Performance increases of over 43 HP and 42Ft-Lbs with a tune
  • Straight forward installation, no welding required, includes all mounting hardware

B & B's Bi-Modal exhaust for C6 Corvettes.

Boat also went into detail about the C6 Corvette exhaust system by explaining the bi-modal exhaust system, “the bi-modal exhaust system, means that it has two passages, or modes, that the exhaust can travel through the muffler.  Each of the mufflers have two outlets, with one side having a butterfly type valve which allows the exhaust flow to be shut off, regulating which side of the muffler the flows exhaust.  One side of the muffler is the “quiet” side, and one side is the “loud” side.  The “quiet” side is a smaller, muffled and chambered tube, while the “loud” side is 3” tubing straight through.”

Having seen the two complete exhaust systems in the B & B Performance Exhaust booth, it makes us want to go out and buy a new Camaro and a C6 Corvette so we can get our hands on these exhausts.
