PRI 2016: Kinsler Shows Off Improved And Upcoming Intakes

We recently wrote an article on Brent Schubring’s immaculate fourth-gen Camaro, and amazing as the car is as a whole, the centerpiece is arguably the Kinsler Fuel Injection intake peeking out from under the cowl of the catfish. Brent frequently gets both comments and questions about the intake in a never ending deluge of inquiries. But can you blame them? One look at Kinsler’s intakes and you can see why anyone would want to run one.

Naturally, this meant we had to stop by the Kinsler’s booth at PRI 2016 to see what they had in store for the new year and we have blown away. The first item that caught our eye when we stopped was a display they had running an individual runner intake with a drive-by-wire footprint gas pedal. Needless to say, we were more than intrigued. So we sat down with Greg Murchison, Kinsler’s general manager to ask about the new system.

“There were a few challenges that we had to solve when designing this new system,” said Murchison. “The motor doesn’t receive much amperage, so it requires the throttle blades to be easy to open. In the standard system, the blades ride on bushings that can cause quite a lot of resistance when there is a vacuum on the back of the blade—which isn’t a problem with cable operated setups—but becomes one in a drive-by-wire application. In order to decrease the resistance, we upgraded these to ride on bearings.”

The bearing allows the system to function with very little resistance and allow the standalone computer to vary the blades in the finite manner required to accurately modulate the throttle position. The particular system we looked at was developed for a Lexus racing program and is one of only two in existence (the other being used on the racecar).

Another new product we discover while visiting with the guys at Kinsler was new “knife edged” throttle blades. The blades have been streamlined in an effort to cut down on turbulence and improve aerodynamics as the air enters the engine, increasing flow by up to 10 percent. However, these units avoid the normal trappings modifying the blades by hand, which can sometimes result in out of round plates.

The drive by wire system we viewed had us curious about future LS and LT developments and whether they would work with a stock computer.

“The drive-by-wire system has to be run using a standalone system, the stock computer won’t support what we need it to,” said Murchison. “But a lot of aftermarket computers like the AEM Infinity or Holley Dominator work very well with the system.”

We also discovered that Kinsler developed the intake for the Corvette Daytona Prototype car. Murchison said that they haven’t yet done an intake for an LT equipped car, but they have everything ready and if a customer requests it, they are prepared for it.

“We can realistically do almost anything a customer wants,” Murchison said. “If it doesn’t make sense and it will cause a lot of problems, we’ll try to steer people way from that, but from an application standpoint there really isn’t anything we can’t figure out.”

So, who wants to be the first one to sport one of these on an LT? You’ll have to beat us to it.
