PRI 2012: Scat Strengthens LS Engines With Forged 4340 Cranks

[1]The continued growth in the LS markets, especially boosted models on the street and more racing bodies accepting it, has spurred Scat [2] to offer six versions of its forged 4340 standard-weight crankshafts for Gen III and Gen IV engines.

“There are all sorts of applications out there now for the LS,” says Alex Gonzales of Scat Enterprises. “This line is designed for a turbocharged or supercharged engine, or just those customers who want to strengthen the bottom end.”

The crankshafts could also be used in racing classes allowing modified LS engines.

All six crankshafts are designed for a minimum 6.125-inch connecting rod length. All weigh 48 pounds and come with a 2.100 rod journals.

Standard features include:

  • [4]
  • [5]
  • [6]
There are two models each for the following strokes: 4.000, 4.125 and 4.250. The only difference is that one has a 24-tooth reluctor wheel (Gen III) and the other has a 58-tooth reluctor ((Gen IV). Both 4-inch stroke cranks have 11mm x 1.5 flywheel bolts while all others have 7/16 x 20 bolts. ARP bolts are included with the 4.125 and 4.250 cranks.

All cranks are rough balanced to 1,800 grams.

Another unique feature to this crank is the series of holes through the mains to help alleviate some of the windage problems that often plague the LS platform.

“These are designed to let the engine breathe a little better,” adds Gonzales, noting that Scat offers a full line of 4340 H-beam and I-beam connecting rods for the LS engines as well as complete rotating assemblies with bearings and rings.
