PRI 2010: Doug’s Headers’ New Electric Exhaust Cut-Outs

[1]Exhaust cutouts have long been a trick that hot rodders have employed on their cars to gain the best of both worlds depending on the situation. Because while switching out a set of wheels and tires when you go the dragstrip is a relatively simple process, swapping out your welded or tediously hung exhaust just isn’t that realistic. But in using an exhaust cutout, you can step from the quiet (and legal) catalytic converter and muffler setup to an open exhaust offering more flow and certainly more noise.

Today’s exhaust cutouts are usually of the electronic variety, making the switch from open to muffled exhaust a simple matter of flipping a switch mounted inside the car. Many designs however, have their own quirks and airflow restrictions, and so Doug’s Headers [2], a division of Pertronix Performance, has developed an entirely new electric cutout on display here at PRI. Made of 304 Stainless Steel, these cutouts feature a high torque DC gear motor that opens and closes the self adjusting and self cleaning gate that, when fully opened, allows zero airflow obstruction like that of other cutouts that use butterfly or similar designs. The cutouts come with a pre-wired harness for easy installation, and kits are available with Y-pipe hookups measuring both 2.5″ and 3″ in diameter.
